Key West Diary 2

Since we plan to stay in Key West at least a month, Sara and I drew up a list of all the things and sites that we want to see and do while we are here. Because we have the time, we can chose to check them off one or a few at a time.

One of the places we had heard much about was the cafe "Blue Heaven" that is only open for breakfast and lunch, so obviously we had to try it out.

Not only do they serve a great breakfast, the building and open air seating area had a long and colorful history in Key West. At various times it served as a bordello, a "speak easy" during prohibition and lastly as the arena where local boxers would meet every Friday for boxing matches referreid by Earnest Hemingway. Not only was he a huge boxing fan he was known to step in as one of the contestants on occasion.

Now it is just a busy, bustling restaurant where you can enjoy a leisurely meal under the lime trees and soak up some local history.

The walkway back to the open air seating.

Of course you have to have a bar, even for some breakfast patrons.

Any eatery in Key West worth their salt has to have Key Lime pie on their menu!
Here is Blue Heavens version of Key Lime  pie. We shall return again to sample their pie!😃

If there are free roaming chickens and roosters about everywhere, then it must be Key West!

One of the many oddities of this most southern, sub-tropical city is the number of chickens and roosters throughout the city. They were supposedly brought to Key West by Cubans immigrating here and bringing their cock fighting roosters with them, since cock fighting was a big part of the Cuban culture. Once cock fighting was outlawed in Florida in the early twentieth century, they were set free to roam and forage for themselves. They have been here ever since.
